Scientists once categorized sea jellies and ctenophores in the same phylum, but the differences between these groups have now been well characterized. Both jellies and ctenophores are now on display at the Aquarium!

Instead, ctenophores have sticky cells called colloblasts that do not sting, and eight rows of cilia, or combs, that propel them through the water, producing a flickering, rainbow-like appearance with their movements. 🌈

While they have similarly translucent bodies, live in the same waters, and eat the same kinds of food, combs and other ctenophores are not true jellies due to the lack of stinging cells.

There are at least 100 species in this phylum, Ctenophora (Greek for combbearers and pronounced teen-o-for-uh).

Comb jellies are ctenophores, and we’re highlighting them today in honor of #CtenophoreDay. Ctenophores are often referred to as jellies due to their appearance, but they are actually a type of gelatinous animal in their own phylum.

UFOs? A music festival viewed from space? Some sort of rare gem earrings? No, these are "Mnemiopsis leidyi", aka comb jellies! 🧵

It's molting season on Penguin Beach! Every year, our Magellanic penguins replace their old feathers with new ones. During this time, the birds may look scruffy and will not go swimming, but in about 30 days, they will have a fresh set of feathers. 🪶🐧

When sea otters thrive, they keep sea urchins in check, which means more giant kelp, more habitat, and more fish and shellfish calling the kelp forest home.

In short: more otters = healthier oceans! 🌊✨

Hennessy, the service dog, had the ideal Aquarium day! He saw lots of animal friends, got his caricature painted, and was rewarded with a frog plushie from the gift shop for being a #1 good boy. Great job, Hennessy! 🐾 Photos by IG user @beveragebuds

She is a wonderful octopus and has made an eight-armed impression on all of our hearts. In the coming days, she will be moved behind the scenes for the remainder of her life. 🐙🖤👻

Ghost, the giant Pacific octopus, has laid eggs and entered the final stage of her life cycle, senescence. Senescence begins when a female lays eggs and devotes the rest of her life to caring for them, neglecting her own basic needs like eating.
