Human-made global heating caused two in every three heat deaths in Europe during this year’s scorching summer, an early analysis of mortality in 854 big cities has found

I think the UK is higher up this chart than most people would expect

The Northern Pacific Ocean is currently smashing temperature records.

And it is reaching these levels far earlier than the current generation of climate models had expected.

A short thread 🧵
Time series of monthly Northern Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies from 1850 to August 2025 alongside multi-model expectations of the warming in this area (scenario SSP2-4.5).

A challenging summer for air quality saw the highest wildfire emissions in 23 years in Europe & the UK, driven by wildfires in Iberia. CAMS data also revealed repeated episodes of transatlantic smoke, Saharan dust and ozone spikes. Read the article: atmosphere.copernicus.eu/highest-wild...

📍Spain:

Another round of unusual, excessive heat has been building, forecast to peak through the back half of the week.

🌡️Temperatures 7°-9.5°C ABOVE average.
🔴Heat made up to 5x more likely by -- almost impossible without -- human-caused climate change.

This week’s heatwave adds to a summer of relentless extremes in Spain.

A new report shows how climate change amplified the June–August heat—driving up temps, risky heat days, and the odds of dangerous conditions ⤵️
Dashboard showing summer 2025 heat in Spain. Seasonal temperature anomaly: +1.8°C. 60 days had CSI ≥2 (at least twice as likely due to climate change). 55 risky heat days (above 90th percentile), with 31 added by climate change. City breakdown: Barcelona +2.2°C, 68 CSI days, 62 risky heat days (33 added). Madrid +1.5°C, 52 CSI days, 52 risky heat days (37 added). Sevilla +0.6°C, 27 CSI days, 37 risky heat days (23 added). Valencia +1.8°C, 81 CSI days, 61 risky heat days (43 added).

The "smoke season" is also lengthening. Between 2006 and 2019, the amount of days where average smoke concentration was over 1 microgram/m3 was about a month. In 2023, it was over 6 months 😮

The warming rate over the North Pacific Ocean (NPO) the past 25 years was about 1,000% higher than averaged over the preceding 150 years!

It's the rate of regional warming and the resulting climate and weather impacts that pose such a threat.

There is likely a lot more regional warming in the pipeline, as the level of Outgoing Longwave Radiation increased 2.4 W/m² less than Absorbed Solar Radiation did.

Note that the correlation between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and absorbed sunlight had completely flipped, starting 2020.

We've been warning about this for years and called for increased research and for urgent, precautionary adaptation and mitigation.

The more data comes in, the worse it looks.

How hot is the North Pacific?

The latest data from ECMWF for August, 2025, puts the average sea surface temperature at 6.212 standard deviations above the 1951-2000 average.

If SSTs were normally distributed (they aren't), that would be about 1-in-3.8 billion by chance.
