The Prophet saw someone who spent so much time and effort in worship that their eyes appeared hollow. The Prophet said, "This religion is firm, so practice it gently" and quoted the proverb.

inna l-munbatta lā arḍan qataʿ wa-lā ẓahran abqā

"The lone traveller crosses no land and spares no mount."

It's used when someone does something to excess, like a traveler going ahead of companions, to the point where they don't achieve their original goal.
