The ARC is up at #SenateEstimates this Friday. As per tradition, they come in last on the schedule ▶️ www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentar...

I'm sure there won't be many questions about ANU & TEQSA, so there'll definitely be time for lengthly discussion about the ARC 🫠

Not a dumb question.

The Senate Order demands details of the grants approved/not-approved by the *Minister*. It pre-dates the new ARC legislation where all grants (except CEs & ITRPa) are approved by the Board. The Order was there to ensure Ministers approval grants quickly(ish) – needs updating!

Excellent. Thanks! And excellent that more will be funded!

Re the FT26 cap: FAQs state 'In the FT26 scheme round this funding cap will be removed, and it is anticipated that more than 100 fellowships will be funded.'

1/At Macquarie Uni we are losing 50% of our units in my faculty. This is on top of cuts in 2020. We estimate by next year my faculty will be teaching 80% fewer subjects than pre Covid. Disciplines being cut do not have declining enrolments. @jennaprice.bsky.social @michaelwestbiz.bsky.social

I've asked a friend:

Research office staff:

Ppl wondering about ambiguity bomb in "Summary of changes" doc for Discovery Program fellowships👇

I interpret as 'statements in prev Guidelines about caps on # of FTs & DEs (100 & 200) have been removed', not 'the caps themselves have been removed'.

Anyone clarified w/ ARC?

The thing is, it's not clear from the brief statement in the changes document whether the caps have been removed, or the statement in the guidelines about caps has been removed. Those are two quite different things. I think it means the latter.
arc-tracker.bsky.social
Is there anywhere where it says they have actually removed the caps, or is it just that the caps are not stated explicitly in the guidelines?

The guidelines are now legislative instruments, so if they state a number to be awarded, it must be respected. Maybe they didn't want that restriction?

What do you think about Australia "associating with" Horizon Europe?

It's not me asking, but the Department of Industry, Science and Resources.

I would take a complete lottery over AI assessments, any day of the week, at least with the present nonsense that passes for “AI”.

You might have to print it and snail-mail it to them. They don’t show a lot of … tech skills, let me say.

Once again, ARC hits the 🎯 with their comms strategy:

8pm on Sunday night. When the eyeballs of researchers are glued to … twitter?

They've not posted this anywhere else. I can't think of a better way to _not_ "engage stakeholders". Almost uncanny.
Screenshot of tweet from the ARC about a survey they want "stakeholders" to complete. Black text on white background above a rather outsized picture of dark blue smudges on a light-blue background. One smudge says "Survey" … you know, to catch your eye?
