Today on Plough Sunday I’m at Ripon Cathedral. As we gather to bless the plough, we will give thanks for those who work the land, for those who support them, and for the deep rural heritage that continues to shape our communities today.

“Light and darkness always co-exist, in an uneasy but necessary tension. Their interplay provides fertile soil for creativity, and if we are willing to embrace the patterns they create in our lives, we’re likely to discover a lot more about what it means to be fully human.”

Our lives are busy, full of distractions. As Christmas approaches take time to consider what are the values on which I want to build my life? How can I listen to God without my ego getting in the way?

“True peace, is about reconciliation – the restoring to wholeness of that which is harmed, damaged or broken. True peace involves being reconciled to ourselves, to one another, to creation and to God.”

“As Christians we are called to be people of hope, to be those who see the signs of God’s presence in our world, communities, churches, and relationships. And having noticed, to then cherish and grow this hope; foster and practice it even against the odds.”

It is not easy to dwell with the dark side of our humanity, but Advent invites us to face ourselves as we are, reassuring us that hatred and pain do not have the final word.

“The Advent and Christmas stories implore us to soften our hearts. They entreat us to pause and reflect, to remember that behind every statistic is an individual, a family, a child even, with their own joys and sorrows, hopes and dreams.”

My chosen book for Advent considers the Magnificat. Mary recognised that the incarnation was good news for the downtrodden and powerless. The angel’s message changed Mary’s life, and her song changed the world.

A joy to watch the Advent Wreath being raised at York Minster today. It reminds us of the joy of Christ’s birth and his promised return. Thanks to the team of volunteer Flower Arrangers, whose skill and devotion each year creates this remarkable centrepiece.
