Absolutely amazing documentary I was lucky to see a showing of tonight at the Hi Pointe. Joining Walter Johnson, Gwen Moore (neither of whom are on bluesky) in the film to provide great historical context to Percy's one of a kind social justice action, is @devintoshea.bsky.social

Thanks Devin, its getting there. Now that I don't feel muzzled, it'll improve into more than show and tell and pretty pictures.

Also his father worked the CDA when it was implementing Team 4, involved in all sorts of bad stuff working for schoemehl, big fan of displacement and handing tifs/abatements out like jelly beans

Ok the substack is scheduled for 4:30pm today, unless I got the time wrong last night, its possible

It is chalk full of Mill Creek colorizations as well as a number of non-colorized photos that I love showing Mill Creek Valley, in the Lemen Street & Sewers collection.

10 feet off both sides from Jefferson to Grand means that pretty much everything in that photo set likely survived widening. Rare for that to happen on such a big artery. Market shaved something like 20 feet off the south side, destroyed a fair number of mill creek businesses in the process

You know it's gonna be a doozy of a letter to the editor when they don't even sign their name

Supreme Court: of course states can regulate, and restrict access to, medical procedures if there’s a compelling public interest

Colorado: (bans conversion therapy for minors)

Supreme Court: no not like that, we only meant abortion

And if you're a nerd about this stuff and want copies of the city plan commission reports from 19xx to like 1970, let me know. For some reason I still have them drive.google.com/file/d/1SlS_...

If you're into the whole 'when did the city become so car centric' probably take a look at the late 1920s, also about the time Bartholomew started getting serious with his BS

Anyway, doing research on another substack bc Adhd, and come to find out they were very busy in 1927. Not just getting ready to widen Morgan Street (hence that amazing collection of photographs I've been talking about on FB and IG) but also this:

On Chicago’s NW side from 1854 to 1970 there was a “civil commitment and forced medical care” institution called Dunning Asylum, later the Chicago State Hospital.

People realized during construction in the 1990s they were building on mass graves of poor and mentally ill people.

There is precedent.

I told them I didnt want a "Mark's last day is..." email because it would have been like the 10th email in as many months. So many great people have moved on. Its insane.

Was annoyed at the number of Mill Creek photos I still hadn't colored from the Lemen Collection, and there's a lot, probably close to 40 images overall, of which maybe 20 are worth coloring and I've colored 10

Started a new one tonight
