There are lots of reasons to celebrate Dick Van Dyke's 100th birthday. One of them is the fact that he's a living, breathing, friend of Stan Laurel.

PSA: The Los Angeles County Library actually rents DVD players. And some NY State libraries offer a range of audiovisual equipment. The Brooklyn library lets you borrow on-site equipment to convert analog media to digital & it has an amateur recording studio.
A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

Question to my film friends: can you name a funny German film? And I mean intentionally funny, not like Herzog.

FWIW, seeing THE SHINING on IMAX was aaaaaamazing. The sound? HFS. Wendy Carlos on 🔥! And everything was just so ❤️❤️❤️! I kept thinking about how much I love movies and how that keeps me alive in every way while I watched.
Only sad part of today was that I left my favorite glasses in a taxi 😭

I love when my research gets extra exciting. I mean, I love what I’m doing so it’s ALL thrilling (n3rd alert) but I just got to this chunk that is so freaking cool.
As opposed to maddening, depressing & frustrating which…also happens a lot because, well, f**k colonialism.

NBD. Just gonna go see The Shining on IMAX tomorrow. Y’know, as you do.

Some time ago, I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Alport Syndrome, that is incurable and is causing my kidneys to fail. I need a kidney transplant, and I am searching for someone who might be able and willing to donate a kidney to me.

It's so hard when you're doing research on a larger project not to Fall Down the Rabbit Hole. I have fallen...HARD. I've decided I'm ok w/it bc I will need this info later on & there are SO MANY DETAILS my brain is not gonna grab them all. I just hope I can get the basic story. Please 🙏

Just had a conversation about vacations with my manager.
Looks like I will be taking my birthday week off this year. I haven't had my birthday off in...many many years.
Maybe someone will visit me or I can go somewhere fun.
Also? Looks like I might be able to go to BIFAN *and* Busan this year!

Korea: I've been here researching for a few hours. I go outside & I start talking to these women & they tell me they've seen me around the neighborhood doing what I do. They said they wanted to approach me but thought I wanted to be alone. So now I have two new new friends. I love Korea.
