Had an aha moment reading this. My circling thoughts can be self-destructive. I think there is some benefit to occasionally redirecting my thoughts to building the future I want for us after I'm done grieving the future we got (done grieving for today - the horrors are new every morning, of course).
I need to get better at recognizing when my thoughts are not thoughts, they are not figuring anything out, this is just the human equivalent of how animals in captivity chew on themselves.

I called WF and this was every bit of a scam. Y'all please be careful with texts! The big hint is that they didn't say which card, and also the fact that they called me instead of asking me to call the bank. I picked up to let them know that I would be calling the main customer service line instead.

Estate Planning suggestions for US Citizens considering fleeing internationally *also helpful for fleeing to a safer US state* 1. Please for fuck's sake don't leave without a Durable Power of Attorney assigning a trusted friend or relative as your POA Agent so that they can sign financial documents in your absence. WHY THAT'S IMPORTANT: Are you going to immediately close all of your financial accounts? More and more, banks require you to appear in person at a branch to open/close accounts and handle other financial transactions. Are you going to sell your house before you leave? What if there is no time? You will have to travel to a US Consulate to have your Seller's closing documents notarized in the event that you sell your property after you leave. 2. Please for fuck's sake have a Last Will and Testament executed *in the United States.* This is true for everyone but especially if you plan to continue holding US assets (real property, bank or investment accounts at US based financial institutions). WHY THAT'S IMPORTANT: You will cause a bureaucratic nightmare for your surviving loved ones. There are a bunch of additional headaches involved with probating a foreign Will or administering the estate of someone without a Will who was a US Citizen but was *residing* outside of the country. 3. Your Living Will (end-of-life care directives) and Healthcare Power of Attorney or Healthcare Proxy won't do you much good abroad but if you think there is any chance of ever VISITING or returning to the states permanently, better to have it than not. What happens if you become ill or experience an auto accident during a visit or shortly after you return? You need to give someone authority to make decisions. EVEN YOUR SPOUSE. The spouse is not the defacto Healthcare Proxy on all scenarios or US States. 4. If and only if you want your financial accounts to go to someone specific in the event of your death, go now and add that person as a designated beneficiary on that specific account EVEN IF they are your spouse. The spouse is not the defacto sole heir in all cases or US States. If they can't find your Will or you don't have one, part of your estate could potentially have to be split between your spouse and your PARENTS. I know that will be fine with some of you but not all of you. 5. Estate Planning is STATE law, not federal law, so you need to know how each of these components works in your state.
