Emory announces it is closing its DEI offices.

And, they put the responsibility for announcing it on Leah Ward Sears, former Georgia Supreme Court justice and the new interim president of Emory as of yesterday.

"The standards are clear, and we must act accordingly."

Well, not really, but.
EMORY
Office of the President
Dear Emory Community,
This is a hard and important statement to make, and I want to speak to you from my heart.
I know Emory's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts have meant a great deal to many, not just as programs, but as a statement about who we are and what we believe in. As someone who has reaped the benefits of the needs these programs were meant to address, I know they were created with the best of intentions and staffed by talented, committed professionals.
We live in a time of changing expectations and new requirements, however. Federal laws and mandates have been implemented that require higher education institutions to alter fundamentally or even close offices and programs focused on DEl. The standards are clear, and we must act accordingly.
Guided by the Office of General Counsel and other appropriate campus officials, we will work promptly and carefully to discontinue current DEl offices and programs. We will also work closely with each impacted employee to provide appropriate support and assistance through the transition. I understand all too well the significance of this change and the questions it will generate in the minds of many. For me, the core issue is one of values. The Emory I believe in is committed to every person having an equal place, voice, and chance to succeed. We demonstrate this every day through how we lead, hire, mentor, and serve. Closing offices or reimagining lawful programs is not, after all, the same as ending our unwavering commitment to fairness, belonging, and opportunity for all, values that are part of Emory's
DNA.
I'm honored to lead Emory, and I'm excited to work together as we inspire and challenge each other while making sure everyone in our community feels valued and respected. I'm confident we can follow the law while not losing sight of who we are.
Sincerely,
Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L
Interim President

This is a really important piece taking apart the false factual premises of the Trump Administration’s attack on UCLA. There was no “Jew Exclusion Zone” at UCLA.

The federal govt's extortion of UCLA has numerous problems. One is that it is ostensibly based on some factual allegations that are so exaggerated that they are actually false.

I wrote about this today in a long blog post reflecting on what I saw at UCLA and how lawyers later mischaracterized it:

There's a lawsuit about AI stealing your work. It's the same lawyers taking on Elsevier et al in a separate case.

Academics:
1. Check if your work is in LibGen at www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

2. If so, let the lawyers know at www.lieffcabraser.com/anthropic-au...
alexdecampi.bsky.social
There are tons of graphic novels, academic papers, film and TV scripts, & prose novels/nonfiction on the LibGen list Anthropic used.

As settlement approaches, make it easy for the class action lawyers to contact you! Here’s how

Part 1: is your work in Libgen?

Search LibGen, the Pirated-Books Database That Meta Used to Train AI
Millions of books and scientific papers are captured in the collection’s current iteration.

In significant part the systematic attempts by right wingers to erase the history and realities of slavery in the US is aimed at preparing the ground to (further) frustrate and reverse civil rights legislation and jurisprudence.

NEW—Earlier this evening agents from ICE/other fed agencies were outside Rhode Island Ave metro in DC asking people exiting the station for their IDs, per someone who experienced it. When the person presented their Real ID license, an agent said that wasn't sufficient. Luckily they had secondary ID.
