I'm all in favour of US citizens and Chinese citizens talking to each other like people rather than through their governments' political propaganda, but if one result is this sort of whataboutism then that's hugely depressing
And the old talking points aren't working anymore.

Anytime someone brings up the Uyghur people or Tiananmen or anything, American's are just like, "Gestures broadly to Palestine/War On Terror/Patriot Act/Climate Change/Oligarchs/Gerontocracy"

To make this about me, I have consistently argued that while South Korea shares some US interests, it does not share all of them. And neither does the region: we are still getting Asia wrong. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Here's a chilling account of what might have happened if Yoon's plans worked, how they were obstructed by delays that allowed the National Assembly to resist. +Potential collusion with conservative party, role of Han faction in breaking with party, jail plans for Gwacheon, Yoon's mental state...

A few random thoughts about Yoon's attempted coup/martial law:

1. It is so outrageous I am having trouble getting my head around it. I was in Korea in 1987 and I remember martial law. This is one of the dumbest moves by a Korean president in its history.

2. Yoon's fate is sealed...

Folks in D.C. ignored his domestic train wreck because he was playing nice with Japan and he sang a song at the White House. That was obviously missing the forest for the trees. His entire foreign policy will be repudiated, and relations with Japan will be radioactive.
