Since more folks are joining BlueSky, I thought I'd do an intro post.

-Art (traditional media, mostly landscapes, animals and still lifes)
-Gardening
-Academia (InfoTech/HCI)
-Games (esp. Pokemon)
-Tea
-Dogs (esp. German Shepherds)
A collage of different drawings and paintings in various mediums: Some red/orange tulips, a kingfisher, a German Shepherd portrait, a border collie portrait, two cowrie shells and a pink lily. A German Shepherd sitting in grass in front of a large oak tree, with his green soccer ball toy next to him. He is smiling at the camera.

Update: Apparently it's a noisy miner, not a myna.

To the delight of all the staff who have been eagerly watching it for the last week or so, Mumma bird has now laid some eggs 😍

Someone left their bike and helmet unattended outside the Information Technology Faculty building at uni and this little myna bird took advantage of it and built a nest in the helmet...

One approach I’ve seen people use is buying a cheap shitty dumb phone and taking that to work. When employer tells them to install the work app they show them the phone and say “Sorry, I don’t have a phone that can run that app.” Employer either supplies a smartphone or just lets the matter drop.

Hehe Rosco is generally pretty good with gardening and doesn’t cause too much strife, but his tail has knocked over a few potted plants over the years.

Clock in apps are *usually* safe, so having it on a personal device might not be an issue, but it’s worth double checking to make sure it doesn’t give any permissions that might allow someone to access your data or remotely wipe your phone.

You would probably need to look up laws in your country but in a lot of places if an employer requires you to install a particular app on your phone, they are required to provide you a phone specifically for work.

My main concern is security vulnerabilities. I run an antivirus but those won't help an OS exploit if one is found once Win10 stops being patched.

I'm still on Windows 10 and I'm dreading being forced onto 11 in the next month when Microsoft stops supporting 10. 10 just works and 11 has so much AI shit I just do not want.

One bean (a dwarf butter bean) sprout is so advanced I've potted it out onto my table with some other tomato seedlings and rosemary cuttings til it's a bit bigger and can go in my raised garden bed.

Checked on my seedlings today, and lots of tomato seeds have sprouted (in many varieties) along with a couple of beans.

The chilli seeds I sowed didn't sprout, so I've tried again with some newer ones I collected last year.

The dog probably works there on retainer

Other people on their day off: I'm going to go to the beach or have lunch out with friends or go to the cinema!
Me on my day off: *drinks too many energy drinks and goes feral in the Microsoft Word document for my novel manuscript*

Ugh... I've just realised my novel needs another chapter in part 1. It means a lot of stuff later on will have to get shuffled and shoved around, but it will help fix a number of the plotholes and info gaps I've run into in part 3.

I can't log into Microsoft Teams on my phone because my university email account 2FA is managed through Okta but the Teams login defaults to the Microsoft Authenticator which I use for my personal email account.

*walks into cafe*
Me: Hey, can I have a sandwich?
Server: Yes, it comes with lettuce, tomato and dogshit.
Me: I don't WANT dogshit on my sandwich!
Server: My manager measures my performance based on how many dogshit sandwiches I sell, so if you don't want one, this conversation is not interesting.

If you let your kids play with AI Chatbots you're a bad parent. I don't throw that language around loosely, you are. a. bad. parent.

I spoke to parents who are letting their young kids play with generative AI and tried to sort through some of the questions they have about it.

"I don’t know what this is doing to their brains," one dad told me.

Meanwhile, Sam Altman says, "Kids love ChatGPT on voicemode."
‘My son genuinely believed it was real’: Parents are letting little kids play with AI. Are they wrong?
Some believe AI can spark their child’s imagination through personalized stories and generative images. Scientists are wary of its affect on creativity

This is really disappointing. I love Hudson & Rex and was looking forward to Charlie coming back because of the chemistry he has with the rest of the cast, but if the producers have effectively fired him for having cancer, I think I'm tapping out.

‘Hudson & Rex’ producers confirm they decided to ‘move forward without’ star John Reardon after cancer treatment.

The recasting of Hudson has sparked fan outcry and an evolving narrative about how the decision was made.
