Me and my good pal Andrew from @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social gatecrashed a local #supermoon gathering last night with his Dobsonian🔭. Minds were blown as we looked at the lunar mare and craters through patchy holes in the cloud cover. Pop-up sidewalk astronomy at its best - loved it!

The Devils Postpile in Devil's Postpile National Monument formed less than 100,000 years ago from a thick basalt lava flow that cooled slowly, creating tall, symmetrical hexagonal columns later shaped and polished by glaciers.

USGS says episode 35 of the current eruption at the Halemaʻumaʻu crater will happen between Oct. 15 and 20. #volcano monitoring is considered essential during the government shutdown.

Episode 34 only lasted six hours but it was spectacular, shooting out 1300 foot tall lava fountains.
