Lila's first case was saving her sister from being tried for stealing a trophy. That was when she realized she could be a detective instead of just reading about them.

How did your character get started on their current line of work/quest? What started them down that path?

Was it a specific choice they made? Serendipity? Was their hand forced by someone? Was it a mistake?

Lila: "There's always someone who needs a case solved."

Denala: *shrug* "Magic means I have as much money as I ever need."

What's your character's go to move when they are short on funds?

Extra shifts at work? Ask a friend or relative? Plan a heist?

Or are they wealthy and it's never a problem? Or in a post-money society?

Lila wears a distinctive puffy yellow coat, which is based on one I actually own.

Let's do an appearance one today!

What would you say is the first thing someone would notice about your character when meeting them? Is there something about them that stands out?

How do they feel about that?

Lila starts going to college starting in Book 2, studying criminal investigation.

Denala has an apprenticeship with the world's greatest wizard.

Lila would either spend it with her family or her roommate's family. She'd probably make time for both.

I've got holidays soon, which got me thinking: who would your characters choose to spend their holidays with?

Friends, family, a lover, a combination of these?

Would they want a large gathering or small?

Most of my characters are lawful good, though they sometimes struggle with whether "lawful" or good" is more important.

Here's a basic one we haven't done yet! Where do you think readers would say your character falls on the classic D&D style alignment chart?

Does that change over the story?

If they don't fit, why is that?

Focus on their personality, their arc, or anything else that is core to them as a character!

Denala actually can't speak at all. And due to the way magic works, conditions that you're born with can't be healed, so she and her mother invented a form of sign language, which she also taught her best friend.

Does your character speak English? Or another real language?

Do they speak a fictional language transcribed as another for the sake of the reader?

Are language barriers ever a problem in the story?

Inheritance functions much the same as it does now, in a legal sense. One may will one's wealth and property as one sees film. However, in my setting, there are no tax exemptions for the rich, and there are likely to be severe social consequences for families who hoard wealth while others suffer.
#DecemberWorldbuilders, tell me about inheritance in your world. How does it work? When a person passes away, who gets their stuff? Do bastard children have a claim? Do they even have a concept of bastard children? For those of you writing monarchies, who inherits the throne?

Lila did cheerleading for a while in high school, mostly as a favor to her sister. She still practices when she has time, since it's good physical conditioning for her detective work.

Clariss is a priestess in order of Kelestra, a very real goddess that she regularly communes with. Kelestra is benevolent, but also firm in her spiritual advice. She chides Clariss for hiding her past from Denala, since part of her oath is to make amends to those she's wronged.

Lila doesn't always know what's good for her. I imagine that if she was on a case, she'd try her best to work through any illness. Much like the current incarnation of Nancy Drew, I suppose (even though that trait was displayed in my second-least favorite book in the series).

A bit under the weather tonight, apologies if I am slow to respond!

On a related note: how does your character deal with illness?

Are they stoic? Whiney? Immune to it altogether? Just drink a healing potion?

My main characters are teens or new adults, so they haven't really that far ahead. Though Lila does realize that she wants to be a detective after solving her first case. She goes to college to study criminal investigation.

Amber lives with her Mom at the beginning, then with Juliana at the end.

Lila lives with her parents for the first few books, but she moves into a dorm when she goes to college.

Denala has to rely on inns and campsites, since she no longer has a hometown.
