As part of @everylibrary.bsky.social's roster of events for Banned Book Week (buy a banned book @bookshop.org), Jessica Stoya and I talked about Fanny Hill, criminal and civil book bans, and the US Supreme Court:

I tried to explain exactly that to Kid and he did not like it *at all*

When someone asks “are you available tomorrow?” always ask “what time?” before saying “yes”.

Tomorrow will be interesting. Currently setting an alarm for 4:40am
A Casio alarm clock

Also really love ‘The Makani: Caring for the Maiko House’

Watched all of it. Love it

“Recent retiree Takeshi rediscovers his passion for food and life by getting in touch with his inner warrior and eating what he truly desires”

In other very placid news, I started watching ‘Samurai Gourmet’ (2017) and love it. Wholesome, gentle, engaging

I think what I’m finding so difficult about this is when I was 16 all I wanted was to have some freedom of choice and be allowed to roam a city alone. And I’d let him do that. But he wants to go on one of the hardest hikes overseas in a dangerous country without me

He was so mad at me and I was laughing
asherwolf.bsky.social
He wants to do Kokoda and only Kokoda. Lol
asherwolf.bsky.social
Yeah and he gives no shits because he’s 16 unfortunately. His grandmother also raised it
asherwolf.bsky.social
Ok. I’ve told him I don’t love this decision. But I’ll support his application and deal with his grandmother. It’s difficult to just say no, like “davka” - just because, because I say so - now he’s a young adult

He’s pretty fit but he’s not military grade fit by a long shot

Also I offered to send him to Plum Village zen monastery in France to stay at the teen boys camp. He looked at the pictures of kids holding hands in a circle in the French mountains and absolutely cracked it at me

20 weeks training. He’s doing a year 12 subject next year which means it’ll drop his grade result

Part of the reason he’s mad at me is I couldn’t afford the East Timor school trip five kids are going on
asherwolf.bsky.social
No it’s fine. But I’m going to specifically ask you as two people who have done it: is there value in sending him to do it? is it politically respectful? and is giving him permission to do it a failure of duty of care as a parent?

He’s no longer in scouts after Jamboree. I offered to join him up again anytime: he doesn’t want to do it again
asherwolf.bsky.social
He’s under age. He wants to go without me
asherwolf.bsky.social
I tried to offer him options which rescuers could reach if there's a problem - nope. He wants to go overseas. Part of this is envy - he has mates who have travelled to Singapore and Italy. I just can't afford it for him right now. And he's mad at me for it
asherwolf.bsky.social
The other hike he wants to do alone is also *not something I can allow him to do* as a parent. It would just be too hard to airlift him out, even if he's locatable

1. He's 16, most organised tours won't take him and the youth adventures that will start at like AUD$10k. 2. He wants to go overseas. And that then makes the costs skyrocket. 3. I do not want him hiking alone overseas or in dangerous conditions he's unused to. And physically I can't hike on my knee
