I'll just quickly re-iterate it's a finite resource. But also to keep the resource/climate politics in perspective, even UK North Sea has struggled with the cost and climate-related pushback. And then, if it's about global/federal policies, that's not something the prov government here controls.

The one thing to not do is make it your banner the same day as the release of a major report showing just how much your province has been in the oil business and continues to be.

That's to say the "back in the oil business" line might have been good to trot out AFTER movement on BdN local benefits, inclusion on federal major projects list (good Q: what does it exactly do?), movement on settling the prov-fed cost share issue, or a green light. ...Even a good land sale?

For Bay du Nord, by insisting on fresh EOI related to construction, you could actually argue the current government has risked a more rapid shift for NL out of the oil business (which will come naturally regardless of the politics!)... I think BdN companies are managing, but not exactly a help

But even if ALL of that was ignored (how?!?), there's still the fact nothing has changed. At this point, unless they've yet to announce it, there's nothing the PC-led government has done to alter decisions on new o&g sector spending here or for projects here.

You could look at provincial budgets, at the subsidies and industry-specific spending (and I'm not commenting necessary or not, but it's there), or review the positive comments in public speeches by government members, before suggesting provincial Liberals ended support for the oil industry.

You can look at the new report from Energy Research & Innovation Newfoundland and Labrador (province's Oil and Gas Corp is a member!). It's laughable setting this alongside the premier's post, given notes like: "The industry generates an annual average GDP of $8.85 billion" (2018-2024)

Frankly I think the feds are overestimating how far that $8 million for the breakwater in Petty Harbour has taken them with the electorate.

You can be critical of PC approach. There's argument around what can progress based on choices. But there are also limits on the frankly ludicrous claim this was basically done and just matter of sitting down and signing contracts. That MOU is full of 'to be negotiated' detail. Good to keep in mind.

Worth the point that not yet having reached the level of Term Sheets is good way to show clearly how - despite the assertions to the contrary and allegations now of PCs throwing away "the deal" - this was hardly done under the Liberal camp and certainly wasn't signed and sealed under Furey.

Looking forward to the coverage all around.
