"Something that hasn't been made clear: Firefox will have an option to completely disable all AI features."

Should absolutely be the default. Say NO to slop.

My wife dropped the hardest line last night outta nowhere: “You don’t want to be perceived, but you do want to be remembered.”

First snow of the season, so we made Cat Shit Cookies! 🍪

We were missing a bunch of the ingredients, so we substituted coconut milk for the whole milk, and used 1 cup of raw honey instead of 2 cups of sugar.

WSL2 is like the singular good thing on Windows 11, and today it has crashed twice running my relatively vanilla Ubuntu install. 😞

Very excited for the new year when I will have the time to completely wipe Windows off of this machine and go back to running Debian.

Adding onto this a bit, Jonathan Blow is a hero turned villain for some programming language developers. I know of at least a few people (myself included) whose interest in programming language design and development can be directly traced back to Jon's talks on PL development for games.
Additionally, in recent years it has become increasingly clear that Jon’s beliefs/priorities and mine are not aligned. He’s adversarial to people talking about privilege and representation, is dismissive of diversity efforts, has dabbled in covid trutherism, and is pro-MAGA.

Welp, by the arbitrary rules I made up in my head, this officially means I probably need to learn Rust again if I want to be employable for systems programming-type jobs in the future. 🥲

Congrats to the Rust for Linux team! 🎉🥳
🐧 The end of the kernel Rust experiment

> Rust in the kernel is no longer experimental

It is now a core part of the kernel and is here to stay.

So the "experimental" tag will be coming off

Congratulations are in order for all of the Rust for #Linux team

so many of the small indignities of daily life come from us being denied the ability to tell a rich man in a tech company to fuck off. minesweeper has microtransactions. paid services have ads. the opt out says maybe later. the drive thru is a broken chatbot. your car is an ipad. fuck off! fuck off!

I guess I now have to do a thread on shoes in ancient Mesopotamia in response to this (which happens to be from one of my favourite accounts).

I’m not an archaeologist, nor do I really know anything about shoes, but let’s go on this journey together.
can't believe this ancient mesopotamia shoe wearing ass said people need to dress up at the airport

This is 100% accurate, and it kills me a little bit inside.
Working for a SaaS company and then logging into bsky is a surreal experience because bsky is all "no one wants AI, ever" and in the meantime like 90% of real customer feedback I read at my real job is like "where the heck is your AI? I'll cancel if you don't add it by next week"
There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

@gregcons.bsky.social has a lovely CppCon talk from… *checks YouTube* …ten years ago (god I feel old) that lays a great foundation for how to teach newcomers C++ by skipping all the warts from C and “legacy C++” (some big air quotes there) because those C-isms and older patterns are just bad C++.
I know it's more complicated than this but it would genuinely be a better first approximation to tell newcomers that C/C++ does not have strings or arrays
"if you pass an array to a function it can no longer tell how big it is, you have to tell the function how big the array is in advance" - they made the language wrong then!

(i am joking but it is funny finding out how much harder this is than c# or python)

I did not have original Guild Wars enhancements on my bingo card for this year, but I am genuinely so excited to see development effort coming into the game! I was planning on doing another full playthrough soon, so this is dropping at the perfect time! 🥳🎉

Oh hey I worked on this! Bonus fun fact: this feature accidentally ended up being really easy to implement due to completely unrelated work normalizing the behavior of VCL function calls. A great example how the right data structures and algorithms can allow your compiler to do more with less.
hellooo i wrote a blog post about some compiler stuff i helped work on. it's stuff you might take for granted in other ... normal languages. i'm extremely proud of the work we did! PLEASE LIKE IT
