ASH was in Parliament yesterday with the Smokefree Action Coalition, speaking to peers about why the smokefree generation is so important. It was fantastic to hear such strong cross-party support from our speakers for the Tobacco & Vapes Bill. Ending smoking is not a partisan issue!

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer.

Today’s National Cancer Plan reinforces the Government’s commitment to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and the smokefree generation policy that will ensure our children do not grow up with the cancers caused by smoking.

While nicotine pouches are less harmful than smoking, they should not be used by people who do not smoke. Yet, nicotine pouch advertisements are spread far and wide, in plain view of children!

Retailers themselves support the policy, and @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social has emphasised that the policy is straightforward and workable 🛒

The policy only requires an update to age-of-sale signage and routine ID checks against a fixed date of birth, making checks simple for retailers 🚭

ASH data, published earlier this year, found a similar trend among children with a surge in awareness - likely driven by the heavy marketing, including on buses, social media and at festivals.
