Some people want to do a thing and other people want to be a person who does a thing.

These are 2 fundamentally different goals, but at first glance, the people who pursue them seem very similar.

Once I began trying to discern the difference, the world started making a whole lot more sense.
There's a certain type of writer that likes to claim that thinking about craft, studying other writers, and possibly even reading other fiction at all will "destroy your unique voice" ... and every single one of them writes in identical faux-edgy Reddit prose that is completely interchangeable.

Interestingly, this made me realise that, in reality, possibly marketing is the only isolated function that has to publicly talk & strategise their action around the future while actually being most distant from actual operational vision and brainstorming that happens.
I hadn’t encountered planning for horizons until I came to Zillow. Identifying longer horizons gives the business a language & markers to move together into the future. Longer horizons are critical for innovation and reinvention. There’s a lot of prospecting new tech.
