wow, progress is really slow on this telescope proposal today, isn't it.

OK, this is as good a place as any to say I am CONVINCED that the reason that deli sandwiches in NY are called "heroes" is because of the proliferation of Greek-owned pizza places, and that it's a bastardization/Americanization of "gyro", generalized to be any type of sandwich they'd sell.

The very fun afterparty for a European rocket launch (a year ago yesterday!) had a photobooth. The group of us there who work together (and worked on DART) wanted to capture the moment. :)
Five people, two male-presenting and three female-presenting, cram in together to appear in a single frame. Behind them are signs and memorabilia including what appears to be a space shuttle, though it's hard to see. The men are in button down shirts, one wears glasses and the other has a beard and straw hat. Two of the women wear glasses, the third has her eyes very open (because she tends to close them in photos, not that you'd otherwise know that). All are smiling.

Well, like I said I'm not really a coffee guy. I tended to do the sludge stuff as a kid, at some point I decided that if I was going to try to actually acquire a taste for coffee I should do so with no sugar at all (but lots of milk).

In the end, I just vastly prefer tea. :)
asrivkin.bsky.social
I've never been a coffee guy, but the sludge left at the bottom of a cup of coffee with way too much sugar in it? That's the stuff.

First images of comet #3I/ATLAS from Europe's Mars orbiters 😍

Observing the comet from 30 million km away, #ExoMars reveals the halo of gas and dust surrounding the comet's nucleus.

A white paper on which he's third author was submitted to arxiv yesterday that suggests the formation of a UN body to investigate interstellar objects and determine if they're probes sent by extraterrestrial civlilizations, with him in charge.

The community is reacting as you might expect.

So, you know, we Yankees fans don't have this particular thing to ruminate about, at least.

My first Journal Club presentation, done as a first-year graduate student, was on the newly-disovered (and partially retracted) pulsar planets. 🙃

If anyone from the UN wants to talk, here’s a nice summary. The astronomy community does NOT endorse this proposal, just take it from one of THE EXPERTS on ISOs with Rubin. Meg (and many others) has helped the community plan for +10yrs for these kinds of studies.

I'll for global coordination for ISO follow-up, but it's telling that no one who's actually coordinating follow-up was actually asked to participate in this proposal or thought of to be even suggested as names on committees in this proposal

Taco Bell the most obvious example. I lived in Tucson when the world's largest Taco Bell was built, and it did amazing business because people don't go there to have Mexican Food but to get palatable food at a great calories/$ rate.
