From the American Translators Association. Things to know about Language Access: It affects limited-English-proficient (LEP) individuals. Learn facts about LEPs on the following image. Six of the nation’s leading professional T&I organizations issued a joint statement opposing Executive Order 14224, which designates English as the official language of the U.S. Voice your support for language access provisions by contacting your representatives and ensuring that the LEPs you interact with are aware of their language access rights! Fact 1: 25.7 million (8%) of U.S. residents are LEP. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017) They may speak conversational English but struggle to understand or express themselves in complex situations like testifying in court or receiving a medical diagnosis. Fact 2: 68 million (20%) use a language other than English at home. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2019) They may speak English but it is not the primary language of their home and family. Fact 3: 350 languages are spoken and signed in American homes today. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015) This linguistic diversity reflects the nation’s immigrant heritage and multicultural composition since its founding.
