“Bivalve records are really amazing. They are like the tree rings of the sea. They offer a continuous, annually resolved record of ocean conditions.”
New study finds #AMOC destabilization since 1950 "suggesting that the region is moving toward a tipping point."🌊

Weather info made in Germany on a public TV channel: @terliwetter.bsky.social shows in just 30 s before daily weather news the dramatic melt of glaciers due to accelerating heating. Wished AUS audience would get informed similarly about the crisis.

Herzlichen Dank an Matthias Huss für die Aufnahmen. Die Gletscher ziehen sich weltweit zurück, die #globaleErhitzung ist die Ursache und davon die Ursache das CO₂ aus fossiler Verbrennung. Drastisch.

We estimate the probability of shutdown as 70% for high emissions and 25% for low emissions based on the CMIP6 models. These are rough estimates, but main point is: this is a risk that I used to consider <10%, and given the devastating impacts lasting many centuries we really want this to be <1%.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.🧵

In not even 1 min before the weather presentation after the daily news @terliwetter.bsky.social informs his German TV audience regularly about the crisis. Here, that German forests don't work as CO2 sinks anymore. Wished Australian audiences would be informed similarly.
CO2 gas "bubbles" escape from a dying forest, illustrating that forests in Germany give off more CO2 than they take up as presented by Terli during the daily weather news.
Besten Dank, Herr Rahmstorf!
Off grid in tiny home in Australia, I try to stay upbeat and you are helping, but it is hard seeing what politicians plan (not) to do and reading dismal reports about our Reef amidst misinformation galore.

Eine Stunde Podcast von Enrico Eberlein (Deutsche Bank) mit mir.
Er sagt dazu:
“Manchmal gibt es Gespräche, die einem lange über das eigentliche Interview hinaus umtreiben…
Trotz aller Fakten macht Prof. Rahmstorf Mut...

This is a type of rock called a banded iron formation.

It's made of alternating layers of iron oxides (magnetite and haematite) and silica (chert and chalcedony).

It's 3.2 billion years old.

And it formed before life had oxygenated Earth's seas and atmosphere. It's almost from another planet.

Melting over 80.6% of the area of the Greenland Ice Sheet. This is the highest value in our data set, which starts in 1981.

@polarportal.bsky.social
Screenshot from polarportal.dk, a website that makes research on the Arctic research conducted by Danish institutions available to the public and researchers. The image shows Greenland in tan and the Greenland Ice Sheet in red and white. The red part indicates melting and covers all except about 20% in the northeast, which is roughly the area higher than 2500 m above Se level.

Below the map is a chart that compares 2025 melting to the 1981-2010 average. The average melting peaks in mid-July at about 35%. For the last few days, melting has occurred over roughly 80% of the area of Greenland, with a maximum melt area of 80.6% on 24 July 2025. This is the highest value in our dataset, which starts in 1981.

I only spent three days in the Western Australian outback, but that's enough time to get a sense of the magic of the place.

There are precious few other sites on the planet where you can stand exactly where an ocean closed up three point two billion years ago.

A reminder that all Australian coastlines are reeling from rising sea temperatures - it’s not just coral bleaching.

For every fish that washes up on a beach, millions of sedentary bottom-dwelling animals and plants are quietly dying.

The US Global Change Research Program's website, including all its sub-domains that host the National Climate Assessments and related reports, is now offline.

The 1990 Global Change Research Act (see below) mandates its research findings be available to all federal agencies & departments.

Almost no hard corals - no branching staghorns, no table corals, a dead Pocillopora. On a healthy reef, these and other hard corals should exceed 50% cover.

Very low diversity - some fragmented remnants of rubbery soft corals. The pink stuff is coralline algae. Lots of scuzzy algal turfs.

Awful.
