#PlumeScrolling Daggerstrike Murderbeak, a Grey Heron I photographed at Forest Farm, Cardiff, back in May. So glad I decided to prioritise #NaturePhotography earlier this year, before my thyroid condition began to limit what I could do! #Birds 🦉 🌿
In this photo, almost all of the Grey Heron can be seen standing in some long grass, with buttercups and other wildflowers - the vegetation is covering most of the bird's long legs however. As the bird's name suggests, the plumage is mainly various shades of grey, but the top of the head is black, they eye is yellow with a black pupil and black rim, and the long, powerful beak is blackish above and an orangey-yellow below.

More glass for #31DaysOfGraves Day 8. My pics of the whole window (in Waters Upton church) aren't great, so here's an image combining the three parts of it memorialising Mary Elizabeth Hobson. She was living with her brother, the Rev Samuel Hobson, when she died at the age of 74. #OnePlaceWednesday
Three images combined, showing the bottom parts of three panes of a stained glass window erected "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Mary Elizabeth only daughter of the late Rev. S. Hobson Vicar of Tuttington, Norfolk, Who died at waters Upton July 3rd 1917."

#OnePlaceWednesday + #31DaysOfGraves Day 8: Glass

Stained glass window in the chancel of St Mary’s church at Fawsley, my local #OnePlaceStudy, “erected in memory of Sir Charles and Lady Knightley By a grateful Tenantry” in 1866. With closer views of Sir Charles K & Lady Selina Mary K, née Hervey.
Five images combined, on a black background. In the centre is the a glass window in its entirety. Top left: A closer view of the bottom left pane of the window, depicting Sir Charles Knightley, facing right, his hands closed in prayer. Bottom left: An even closer view of the top part of the same pane, showing the head of Sir Charles. Top right: A closer view of the bottom right pane of the window, depicting Lady Selina Mary Knightley, facing left, her head bowed and hands closed in prayer. Bottom left: An even closer view of the top part of the same pane, showing the head of Lady Selina.

We've got some fantastic nature news to brighten your day 🎉

Wicken Fen has become the first UK nature reserve to record an incredible 10,000 species. A moth that imitates a wasp was the 10,000th species to be recorded. This work is possible thanks to a major grant from The Nature Recovery Project.
A close-up of a glow-worm with a black plated body and a bright green glowing tail clinging to a stem of grass in the dark The scaly brown and beige head of a lizard in side profile, its black eye seemingly staring at the camera A dark grey moth with bright beige splodges on its wings. It sits of a bright green leaf against a black background A small brown bird with a cream chest and darker brown tail feathers perches on a reed against a background of blurred brown and green reeds

Going back this year to see these wonderful birds for the third time. Beautiful ancient woodlands with these magical birds is something not to be missed. Got to be one of my favourite birds to see every year.

While preparing a talk, I just stumbled across this clip of nightingale, cuckoo, turtle dove, robin and chiffchaff singing in north Norfolk last year.

Winter is daunting and conservation is relentless bad news… but for this you keep on fighting.

The Valor Ecclesiasticus is described in the web page linked to below as “an incredible resource for local history”. This three-year project will make the detailed information it recorded accessible to all, and will be of great value to #OnePlaceStudies across England and Wales.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7: Angel

The grave of “Mary, dearly beloved daughter of William and Frances Silvester, died February 22nd 1950, aged 11 years and 6 months” at Tibberton, #Shropshire. A relative, and part of my #OneNameStudy / #SurnameStudy – Mary’s mother was an Atcherley by birth.
Photo of a monument erected on a grave enclosed by kerb stones. The monument is topped by a representation of an angelic child with wings, holding flowers in her left hand. The first part of the inscription on the pedestal below is given in the post to which this image is attached; the inscription concludes with "Jesus went out gathering flowers, on his way he gathered ours."

I shared pics of the tomb of Richard & Jane Knightley on Day 3 of #31DaysOfGraves. For Day 6, here's a closer view of their 4 daughters (on the North side of the tomb), plus 6 granddaughters (children of Sir Edmund Knightley & Ursula de Vere), none of whom survived childhood, in brass on stone.
Two photos combined in a single image. Top: representations of the four daughters of Sir Richard Knightley and his wife Jane Skenard, on the side of their alabaster tomb; each one standing in a compartment topped with a foliated ogee arch, two with hands together in prayer and two with hands held open. Bottom: Very worn brass representations of the six daughters of Sir Edmund Knightley and Ursula de Vere (both of whom are also represented by larger brass figures on the same stone). The three girls on the left face towards the right, while the three on the right face towards the left. On a long strip of brass below them are their names, which have been transcribed as Jane, Isabel, Jane, Joone, Suzane, and Joone.
