An interview about my book A Social History of Political Thought (in Turkish). The original interview was published in 2021 and is now available in English - for those interested in historiography and methodological issues related to the history of political thought.

30. Historical materialist literature on intellectual history is stagnating. Marxists should focus on doing actual critical work instead of sticking to the “the Left should learn from that conservative philosopher” kind of stuff. Follow the feminist historians for guidance, y’all.

Sorry for the late reply (two months!). I still need to read Holz on this, but I believe he is referring to Heinemann’s thesis, according to which P. conceives the One as "the unity of the rational and the irrational."More recent scholars tend to deny any element of irrationality in P.’s metaphysics.

István Mészáros is an underrated philosopher and this one is his most underrated book.

28. Tisini's book on the conceptions of matter in Islamic thought is far better executed than Bloch's "Aristotelian Left." Yet the former remains almost entirely forgotten, while the latter is well read and widely translated. More translations of Tisini's works from Arabic are much needed.

Also, at least two more Lukács events are in the works: one in Konstanz (early November) and another in Berlin (late January). Details will be announced soon.

An entire day dedicated to Lukács - complete with conferences, walking tours, and lunch? In Heidelberg? That may sound like a Lukács scholar’s dream, but it’s reality. Heidelberg, October 21, no pre-subscription required.

And we would have to quarrel six more times about the most revolutionary translation of some random term he uses in a footnote, accusing the most recent translator of being a petty bourgeois revisionist.

And trustee Gürsel Tekin, who -like a conquistador- is now trying to enter the office, which is defended by barricades. Notably, he was a long-serving member of the same party he is now attempting to conquer with the help of police forces.

Bluesky is not yet widespread in Turkey, and X/Twitter remains the main platform for information. Please try to repost and circulate any reliable information about what is happening right now.

In the meantime, social media (already restricted, as is usually the case in Turkey) abounds with messages from journalists, students, academics, politicians, and ordinary internet users who have raised their voices against any part of the process and are now being arrested.

We are witnessing the destruction of the remnants of Turkey’s already agonizing parliamentary democracy, as police forces occupy the Istanbul headquarters of the main opposition party, firing tear gas and plastic bullets both inside and outside against party members, MPs, and protesters.

Excellent suggestion! I will explore her contributions, both for the theoretical foundation and for the weeks devoted to Kant’s political thought.

I was not planning to include the works of Hochschild or Federici, as this is a course in intellectual history primarily focused on 18th-19th c. source readings. However, I do think their works will be important for framing the theoretical approach.
Amy Dru Stanley’s book is certainly of interest.

Classical works such as Pateman’s The Sexual Contract are, of course, on the reading list.
The course is part of the History Dept.’s curriculum, but the audience will likely include students from a variety of departments.
By the way,the remaining 25% of the course will focus on non-Western contexts.
