Happy winter solstice, friends!

By snow’s down, the birds amassed will sing
Like children for their sire to walk abroad!
But what I love is the gray stubborn hawk
Who floats alone beyond the frozen vines.

Thrilled and moved about this -- I couldn't have left it in any hands that are more loving and capable.
So. I have acquired a small press...
(Seriously, I'm tremendously excited and honored to take over here!)
Exciting news! Author Melissa Scott is taking over from Athena Andreadis as publisher and editor of Candlemark & Gleam. Athena will be greatly missed, but Melissa intends to carry on her commitment to publishing innovative SF/F.

Earlier this week I finally picked up the trade paperbacks of these for myself, after reading them as ARCs originally (and making sure I got them in on the shelves at the off-farm-job for patrons). Very beautiful books as well as a highly engaging historical fantasy.

This year I'm eligible for the Hugo Award: editor, long form. I'm also known for strong views & being a non-joiner. I wonder if I'll be preemptively disqualified ("frequently done" per Dave McCarty, casting doubt on years of Hugos); it wouldn't make ripples, though my tiny press casts a long shadow.

Summarizing the appalling self-own/debacle of the Hugo admins: self-importance, sense of entitlement, total ignorance about the focus topic (Nepal, Tibet, what's the diff!), self-censorship partly as virtue signaling. The Hugos may never recover but they're also unlikely to reform. @princejvstin.com

I'm in the minority who liked TrueDetective S2 & never watched S1 b/c I cannot stomach either McConaughey or Harrelson. S4, The Night Country, looks like a direct descendant of The Thing. Verdict so far: the 2 protagonists are terrific, the location atmospheric, the gore excessive.

Worldcon '23: people/works declared Hugo-ineligible w/o explanation or informing those affected, post-explained as obeying local laws. Those who raised this as a concern at the venue bids were dismissed as racists. PRC is a human rights worst-case; its bid should have been rejected or have provisos.
