No, I don't think they did. Especially not like this. It is one reason why the process is split between the two bodies. I believe they thought, more than not, the senate would be reasonable ppl who thought of the country first. Sadly, we're here now.

It wasn't beyond imagining. They expected the Legislative branch to do their part of the 'checks & balances' and impeach when a president goes bad.
