Forgive me y'all but I'm going to set aside MANSFIELD PARK for now 😭😭. It had such a strong beginning but I just don't like it as much as literally any other book Austen wrote. Perhaps the inspiration for the phrase "they can't all be bangers."

Narok wasn’t sure if Emeric was bluffing or not, but he approached anyway. Cautiously, he stood to Emeric’s left, one hand resting on the arm-length knife at his own belt. “That’s enough,” he said. “You’ve made your point.”

I arrive at the last, and I am the last. I raise myself on my palm to my lips, and for once I hesitate, small arms embracing a large snout. As enjoyable as this has been, it does not alleviate my fear. But as it sinks into my core, I am already there, reminding myself that this time will be different. Even if it doesn’t go to plan, it’ll still be different.

I climb across my fangs and slide over the back of my tongue. I caress myself from inside and out, hands finding each other across simulated fat and muscle and fur. At least the outermost layer is convincing. The inner is nondescript, malleable, glistening ink that reveals my true nature. The outsides of my other selves will not remain intact for long.

In time, I begin to merge, to consolidate. At the same time, I dress myself. Nothing formal, I will be stripped before my arrival. All part of the process. I steady my breathing, force of habit. Useless air into a single, useless cavity. One lung, just for show. Just like my stomach. My teeth. My eyes. My personhood.

My apparent solitude.

It’s all Mod can do not to squirm and draw attention, the soft pads of Sengsef’s gloved right hand in stark contrast with the textured, gripping surfaces of his prosthetic left creating a tactile melange his composure can hardly weather. The broad, fuzzy disks of his ears flick and twitch in Sengsef’s gentle grasp, and his clawed toes curl and scratch at the short carpet.

“Sengsef, there are people around…” Mod whines. He tips his head up to cast a plaintive look at Sengsef, who only meets him with a smug, peaceful smile.

“They’re not watching. But if you start kicking your leg like you do, they might.” Sengsef’s fingers glide around the rims of Mod’s ears, into the fluff where they connect to his head.

It’s quiet to anyone else, but the sound of it, combined with the lion’s delicate, precise touch, takes precedence over all else to Mod, whose eyes roll under fluttering lids, whose jaw tightens, whose…

He squeezes his thighs together, startled by the muffled clap they make from the force. Peeking with a single eye, he finds that it doesn’t turn any heads, thankfully, but it utterly fails to hide what he had meant to hide. His coveralls would do a fine job, unless one is specifically searching for irregularities beneath them.

“You’re getting hard from this?” Sengsef whispers. His breath feels hot, permeating the thin but sensitive flesh he so lovingly, deviously handles. “If that’s all it takes…”
