Hmmm.

And Russian bots.

So if we support Ukraine for another year or so, chances are Russia will basically go bankrupt. I hope it will be the end of Putin, and it will certainly be the end of the war effort, that got started when Putin mistakenly thought annexing Ukraine would be easy.

The most hopeful news is the banking crisis. Problem loans (overdue or restructured) are ~10 trillion roubles: 24% of the federal budget.

There could be a massive bank bailout within 12 months, esp. if the EU increases sanctions.

At a price of $100/barrel, the profit was $100-$45=$55.
At $60/barrel that becomes $60-$45=$15.
A reduction of 70%!

I believe the most important thing we can do to make Russia poor is to drive Ural oil prices down.

Moreover, while Saudi prices for producing oil are low, Russia has seen it's prices steadily rising due to having to use increasingly hard-to-extract reserves with production prices (excluding tax and profit) already above $45/barrel.

We should defend Ukraine while making Russia piss poor so they fold again like in 1991. And we are succeeding.

Russia is a gas station masquerading as a nation and after the war drove up oil prices and revenues they are now trending downward again.

I don't think we should (or need to) escalate to the point of bombing Moscow in return for Moscow bombing Kyiv.

But the increasing ability of Ukraine to inflict pain inside of Russia, especially on fossil fuel infrastructure, is a good thing that will make Russia more willing to give up.
November 28, 2025 at 8:50 PM
The sacrifices Ukraine is making to resist Russia are enormous of course. And young Russian men becoming cannon fodder are heartbreaking too.

But for this war to really end, we must make clear to Russia that it's long reign as aggressor is over. Even with the US defecting.
