Stochastic texture sampling might be worth checking out. It seems like it was only recently invented in 2019 and the only application of it I know of is the SkyGFX Extended mod for GTA San Andreas

Crash Team Racing for example uses both, where a stage is split up into "rooms" (BSPs), and visibility regions (PVS) exist within those rooms so the PS1 has even less to render, further improving performance

A binary space partition (BSP) is a way of slicing up a 3D world into regions so there's less to render when the camera's in one of them
A potentially visible set (PVS) is a more advanced version of that where visibility of polygons to the camera is pre-calculated in regions, to also render less

Ultimately they made the weird decision to merge *both* ideas into GT5 & 6, with old PS2 cars alongside the new high-poly pixel-shadered ones...
Their textures are badly rescaled, transparency was broken (fixed in a patch) and the specular mapping they had on PS2 is gone, so they look like mirrors

Ultimately they made the weird decision to merge *both* ideas into GT5 & 6, with old PS2 cars alongside the new high-poly pixel-shadered ones...
