UCD Institute of Criminology and Criminal JusticeCriminology Salon: Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and PracticesMonday 20 October 2025, 13:00 – 14:30 Harty Boardroom, Sutherland School of Law, Belfield, Dublin 4 Professor Nicola Carr, Chair of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College DublinJoin us at our next Criminology Salon where Professor Nicola Carr will discuss her recent book co-edited with Harry Annison and Thomas Guiney, Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and Practices, published by Bloomsbury. This book brings together a range of academic and practice perspectives to analyse the ideas, institutions and practices of contemporary parole. At a time when many parole systems are strained, this collection aims to encourage systematic reflection on parole’s rationalities, institutions, and practices and to pose ambitious “what if” questions about the possible futures of parole and prison release.

The Elenydd are the closest Wales has to a wilderness -- one of the last places where you can truly lose yourself in nature. As wind farm plans gather pace, the planned desecration of these mountains is nothing less than an emergency ✍️ Jane Eynon

"The overwhelming majority of asylum seekers want to share in our standards and escape from persecution or civil war. To describe them as thieves or rapists is not just dishonest but encourages the worst sort of prejudice in our communities," writes Michael Heseltine.

Next up in #Jersey, Frankie Le Villio is honoured with a #Stolperstein stone and his cousin Stan is here to witness it. Frankie’s offence was military larceny. He was deported to #Alderney and then on to a variety of camps, including #Neuengamme. He was liberated from #Sandbostel camp.

Political choices such as austerity, caps to benefits and cuts to social protection spending have led to widespread food poverty.
Hunger is a political choice. Could a 'Right to Food' change everything?

Facebook as a major vector for riots.

(What if anything is being done to stop this?)

EYE PREDICTED A RIOT

A RECENT Guardian investigation into the role of Facebook groups in the 2024 summer riots concluded that the platform played a significant role in driving anti-immigrant sentiment and radicalisation, pointing to "algorithmic amplification" as a reason for the growth in these communities.

This has, of course, long been a known issue. Back in 2020, Eye 1523 reported on internal Facebook presentations from 2018 in which the company admitted that "64 percent of all extremist group joins are due to our recommendation tools".

Similarly I've had to sort out a few car park issues for clients sentenced to custody in one case and mandatory driving disqualification in others.

Incredible work.

Reminds me (on a much smaller scale) of the client who drove to court to be sentenced for a large fraud and false documents conspiracy and told me he’d only paid for 3 hours’ parking.

As he’d previously been advised, he’d have needed 3 years’.

WOW

The Assistant US Attorney tells the judge at Diddy’s sentencing hearing that Diddy has booked speaking engagements in Miami next week.

The AUSA calls it the “height of hubris.”

Does Pete Hegseth remind you of anyone in Catch 22. General Sheisskopf perhaps?

Yes, for example accountancy, trust firms etc offer professional qualifications on job for those who join straight from school. Not my choice but but pays well whilst providing a professional qualification.

I'm glad Keir Starmer is finally stepping up the fight against Nigel Farage, and I hope this will mark the end of his government parroting Farage and copying his divisive politics.

And yet no sanctions on the state which does have undeclared nuclear weapons and is conventionally bombing 7 or 8 neighbouring countries.

Seconded!!!! Lib Dems and Greens come closest, if discounting "your party" as not yet registered.

France is able to manufacture a next-generation fighter jet alone if no agreement can be found with Germany about the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a French official told a small group of reporters yesterday.

“If the needs are divergent [between France, Germany and Spain], we must say so,” a French official told reporters.

The examples were all one way but there was discussion of "me" speech, algorithms power of billionaires etc. Anyone else remember the BBC during "the troubles" using actors to mime to Jerry Adams etc. to comply with censorship laws? 7/10 must try harder from my perspective.

What on Earth is this? An "in depth" BBC article about free speech in the UK that only cites examples of right-wing/ 'anti-woke' speech being suppressed. How can you mention Lucy Connolly but completely ignore Palestine Action / Just Stop Oil? Gob-smacking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

How did we reach a point where the UK is being compared to a 'tin pot Third World dictatorship'?
