The problem is: they've mistaken correlation for causation. They think their parents and grandparents had a good life *because* of manufacturing jobs. When, in reality, their parents and grandparents had a good life *despite* manufacturing jobs, because of unions, high taxes, and social policies.

For the record: I think the best thing Something Awful did on the internet was implement a "We can just ban you if your vibes are off" policy, and I hope that's what we're seeing here.

I think your experience is pretty common- Mastodon has a pretty high barrier to entry, but I settled into aus.social early on and never really looked back. I'm closing in on having more posts there than I ever did on Twitter.
