Do you feel empathy for the Wickhams and Willoughbys and Mr Eltons and John Thorpes and Mrs Ferrarses and Aunt Norrises of the world? If you do I want you to sit with it and examine why.

When you realize that you set your standards based on Austen heroess

And you remember Austen was happily single and told her niece “Anything is to be preferred or endured rather than marrying without affection.”

As a therapist schooling my face is a very important skill… I often wonder if my face is LOUD. I’ve been told I’m maybe better at this than I thought… maybe it’s because I pay so much attention to my face and what it’s doing. Wheee!

I actually prefer tea but since working in mental health I start the day with a cup (or two) of coffee… this was a bad week to try and go back to tea… maybe it will always be a bad week to try the switch. Sigh!

Aunt Norris might be another character. She not only tries to align herself with power… she uses what little power she has to make Fanny, someone with less power, miserable. She doesn’t gain anything from it, but she creates a narrative where Fanny’s misery is required for her to retain her power.

Wake up every morning glad I was able to divorce my Mr Wickham, embrace my inner Fanny Price, and fall in love with the stars and trees!

Happy Valentines to all the Janeites out there. Remember that love is family, it’s community, and it’s friendship. I hope you have many different forms of love in your life and in your world. ♥️

Do you think they know they’re embodying Mr Collins? It’s weird (but not surprising) how mediocre white folks haven’t changed much in 212 years.

I appreciate the conversation neurodivergent folks are having right now to say hell no. This is a whyte suprem@cist narrative that we see repeated over and over again. That mental health gets blamed when some individuals cause harm or that neurodivergence is used as an excuse for harm.

Just some Monday morning thoughts. We could all do to be a little more like Fanny Price. Nature is beautiful and we need to do more to be protecting the world around us. This is a good time (as it always is) to make sure we are listening to, uplifting, and engaging with Indigenous voices.

Please remember that not everyone celebrates the same holidays. Please remember not everyone has access to celebration (both abroad and near you). Please remember to call out your bigoted relatives this year (if you do not fear for you physical or financial security and are generally safe).

Jane Austen is still an amazing space for understanding the complexities of human nature. She wrote about the human experience - the hypocrisy, the heartache, the betrayal, the foolishness, the selfishness, the growth, and the capacities for change.

Then: Austen wasn’t political!!!

Austen: “What have wealth or grandeur to do with happiness?”

“Grandeur has but little,” said Elinor, “but wealth has much to do with it.”
