With my anxiety? Heh. Sure, let’s fill every moment until that day with paralyzing dread!

This has been educational. Could you provide some information on researching small presses in my genre?

Zodiac. With a sci-fi slant.

Thank you. We’re all in this together!

But of course!

I started at Publishers Marketplace, which ranks the top “dealmakers” in the genre. I then researched each of them to determine if they were a good fit and queried accordingly. Once that list was exhausted, I filtered the remaining agents on QueryTracker.

Zero shame for the self-pub game. It’s not some consolation prize for tradpub washouts; I know a lot of authors go straight into it because it’s a laboratory for experimentation. A few hundred readers? Amazing. I guess I’m just fearful of the unknown.

It’s always been a dream. I think my schema for publishing was drawn up when I began writing 22 years ago. Until recently, that framework didn’t allow me to see alternatives. With querying about to terminate simply because there ARE no more agents to query, I’m finally examining alternatives.

Sci-fi has more significant barriers to entry than general fiction. There are relatively few agents who accept sci-fi, and once all taste restrictions are factored in, the number who accept space opera with aliens and xenophobia is even fewer.

As of 100, there aren’t many left.
