My subway line in NYC is only every 12 minutes on weekends so I’m very used to checking departure times while I’m getting ready to leave the house.

I really don’t see the issue here. People are used to turn up and go, which is phenomenal for how far out the WMATA lines go, so they don’t check their phones ahead of time.
But it’s absolutely available to check.

There is officially signed trail access to the station, but you enter the station by using the employees only platform ladder.
