My heat is out and it's cold. How cold? I open the fridge to get a bit of warm air.

TBH, I think TBH is a cringe acronym. Honestly, I think 'honestly' also belongs on the scrap heap. Who would start a post like: 'lemme lie to your face?' Or 'totally lying here but...'

TBF as a #writer it's sometimes hard to let crap slide.

I'm sitting in a quiet room alone, about to open the doors to host my #writers group. I'm reading g tonight. There is absolutely no substitute for an in-person crit group who will call me on my BS.

It's in the 20s all week and my HVAC went out. Been huddled by a space heater with a laptop. Took a break from #writing to plant some potatoes that sprouted. Maybe they'll survive out there. #writerslife #procrastination

In a blurb, I do not care about the world or plot. I care about the MC. I'm not in the blurb to get a sense of awe and spectacle. I'm in it like a new kid in school, in a crowded cafeteria looking for a friend to sit by. Scanning faces for the person who seems to be my type.

Bringing my laptop to do some #writing over the holiday is like when elementary-aged me shoved my homework into my backpack thinking I'd do it while I was on vacation.

I browse blurbs to learn. Most are 100% plot and 0% emotion.
Join me, #writer friends. We can do better. We can get vaguely in touch with our feelings. No need to break down into tears. Just mention what a character is feeling. Ahh.... doesn't that feel rewarding? Liberating? Dare I say, joyful?

As a #writer I'm obsessed with blurbs. I like seeing vulnerability, emotional maturity, and a sense that the light is on in the character's brain. I especially do not want to wade through three chapters of a story before I get some clue as to anyone's feelings.

#writers, personal stakes matter. Make us care about a character. These do not count:
*clashing armies of the dark hordes of Morgorth vs the shining paladins of Highwater
*death of the king and salvation of the grubby peasants of the realm
*impending doom of the world at the hands of an insane god

Blurb #writing tip:
Build an emotion chain with a start, transition, & cliffhanger.
safe > frantic > overconfident > ?
angry > self-critical > hopeful > ?
fearful > panicked > determined > ?
blah > invigorated > anxious > ?
Each emotion you mention is like a hit of caffeine to your sleepy reader.

#writers, here's a character-building question for you: What are your character's pet peeves? That helps them stand out to the reader.

Now for the deeper question: Why are those the pet peeves? How did they start? What emotions do they stir up? That gets to character psyche and theme.

If you've read my feed for even two minutes you know I'm always encouraging #writers to put more emotion in. For yet another reason why, check out this fantastic video from Abbie Emmons about Emotional Dynamic Change, which is crucial. Such a great vid. Is Abbie on here yet?

Are your characters alive? I interview mine until they speak to me:
What would each character do with a kitten? A tuna sandwich? A machine gun?
What would they think of watching Survivor, Scooby Doo, or Iron Chef?

Now...How do those details serve my underlying theme?

Plot quick-start guide:
What do my characters want?
Who is stopping them?
How will they react to being stopped?
What does that say about their personality?
What are their character arcs going to be? Write up start/ending sketches.
How will they get from point A to point B?
BOOM! plot.

#Writing believable, snappy dialogue is a messy process:

1) Write omniscient/distant prose
2) Can this crap be reworked into a POV?
3) Can POV be dialogue?
4) Can this dialogue be made less like two robots expounding to each other?
5) Oh sweet. Lemme throw some smells/touch cues on this.
6) Profit

Plot twists are zesty ways to hold interest. But used wrongly they alienate the reader. Instead of thinking about the secret information you should "deliciously" withhold, instead think: What is the most interesting, dramatic twist I can write? How quickly can I reveal that to the reader? #writer

Go soft! If I could time travel and give young me writing advice, it would be: Do as little world-building as possible at first. Forget the overarching politics, planets, countries, flowers, races, religions. Hard world-building takes time and limits options. Try soft world-building instead. #writer

Alright, looks like we're doing this. I often advise writers not to post huge chunks for review, but instead focus only on the first 300 words. And then @buckwilde1.bsky.social had to go make it official. :)
