Title: Pollution & Profit - are everything People & lives - mean nothing Text: Trump’s EPA will no longer consider impacts on human lives when setting pollution limits, focusing instead on costs to businesses. Since the 1980s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has used a metric called the “Value of a Statistical Life,” which essentially assigns a value to human life, when considering cost- benefit analysis of pollution limits. As TechCrunch simplified, “lowering pollution can prolong human life, so if the health benefits of reducing pollution outweighed the costs, then there was an economic argument to be made in favor of reductions.” The Trump administration’s EPA has now decided to reverse decades of practice when it comes to considering the impacts on human lives when setting pollution limits on fine particle matter and ozone - two of the most widespread air pollutants. (Long-term exposure to both pollutants is linked to asthma, heart and lung disease and premature death.) The agency will instead estimate -only- the cost to businesses. Per reporting from NYTimes, who obtained internal documents of the plans, “The change could make it easier to repeal limits on these pollutants from coal-burning power plants, oil refineries, steel mills and other industrial facilities across the country, the emails and documents show. That would most likely lower costs for companies while resulting in dirtier air.”

Truly Awful. Temps right now (43C = 109F) in Australia & New Zealand have killed Flying Foxes in the thousands. That's on top of 20K+ of these lovely "sky puppies" that died in last April's heatwave, especially nursing moms & pups.
