But it’s easy to mistake an atypical AR as a non-AR. At the end of the day it’s a familiarity question. The safest bet is to refer to an assault-rifle-looking thing as an assault rifle.

An AR is a style. The core of what makes a gun an AR is that it’s based on the Colt AR-15 architecture. The “receiver” is the part that generally classifies a firearm as an AR or not. There’s guns with similar architecture, but recognizing this is how you can tell that the gun in question is an AR.
