A lot of people are going to be blindsided by these tools that they've thought are incompetent. Jobs will be lost that could have otherwise been kept if individuals were working with the technology instead of against it.

That is a very bad outcome!

why limit it to 'hyper-specific game dev applications'? llms are very competent at quickly implementing code from a human language spec. that's the primary way it's useful for game dev (and all other dev).

frantic need doesn't sound good. but correcting them sounds good.

doctorow is making a fool of himself, and anyone sharing this. llms are massively useful, professionally, today. llms are solving decades old Erdős problems, today.

llm use doesn't turbocharge climate change. e.g. even when you amortize training data environmental impact over end user prompts it's in the same ball park as watching a streaming video for a similar duration of use.

I agree it'd have to include human thought. I think there's a narrow sense in which that's true-ish too. just very distorting as a summary.

either he controls the world or the UK can 'let him have it'. not both.

what a cool outcome! another thing that points in this direction is: LLMisms in text are jarring. and 'low effort' human writing doesn't have those!

long before Claude Code writes its first line of code for you, it earns its value by being the most effective diagnostic and debugging tool in computing history

this is nowhere in the conversation. don't get your time wasted

yes, amazing lack of imagination/curiosity about how this class of tool can be helpful. still tons of alpha in not being a reactionary.

llm use is not worse for the environment than watching streaming video.

sunday is usually one of my working days. wife typically does one big activity w kids, goes out somewhere w them. but tomorrow we're all going to visit what may become our new adopted kittens.

i bring the 12yo to guitar lesson, lunch (more policing), my wife brings 6yo to swimming lesson. remainder of afternoon is errands that kids may or may not come along for.

it's stressful. our 2 kids wake us around 7 by either arguing-yelling or playing-yelling. we have breakfast while trying to police them from winding each other up. everyone has an hour of screentime after that.

llms are solving Erdős problems that have been open for decades. you're *very* behind here.
