When he bolted for (and then from) FU that was when the scales fell from the eyes for about half of my (churchy, Ned Flandersy) Republican Nebraska kith & kin. They *loved* the guy until that point. “well if he was the last good Republican then the whole party might actually be rotten.”

It was absolutely bot like this way back when. This was like the top song in the jukebox at the Cowpoke in Killdeer ND in 1994. m.youtube.com/watch?v=sXQi...

About 10ya there was a swerve toward “decent dudes” themes in popular country which was real heartening but then it swerved away. m.youtube.com/watch?v=37IH...

plus if the neighborhood around me densifies then the value of the land UNDER my house goes up. this is why Tokyo has like the worlds most expensive real estate but totally flat housing costs!

One of my coworkers, from an old Xiamen family, spoke a Min dialect that other Xiamenese natives found incomprehensible. It was apparently the *old* Amoy dialect and the few who spoke it were super proud of its obscurity. Like if people in Park slope spoke something like Old Frisian

lol in our town (Xiamen, Fujian) Mandarin was most ppls second or third language (after Hokkien and/or Min), and that’s not even counting the dialects that migrants brought with them from the *real* out-there provinces

This whole franchise sailed right past me. I tried to watch the first one a couple years ago but tapped out after 20min. I say this as a pretty solid Jim Cameron fan

I was also told something like “the way foreigners smile, we think that means you might try to kill us”

This was Xiamen, Fujian province, famously one of the “friendliest” places in China

I used to live in China and after a couple months a friend finally told me “frankly we find ’please’ and ‘thank you’ kind of insulting“. Real eye opening for me

It’s notable that 1) the only 3 characters who significantly resist joining have no families & 2) Manousos is the only character to speak directly to the *virus* (not collective humanity/hivemind). Those 3 are socially damaged creatures, manousos the most damaged

pubs with play zones were absolutely everywhere in the 10s, NGL it was pretty great

Laurelwood was my bike team’s PB sponsor, the team van always had a free keg that we’d tap *for anyone who asked* in the back. that’s what bike races were like in 2011. I have a lot of latent brand loyalty for this almost-dead brewery

I have a power meter in my bike, I can hit 500w for about 10 seconds. Which is why I have to eat 100,000 calories every day

…timewise this was 50–100% more effort than driving, up to 2hrs/day, but it never felt like a chore, and now that they do it on their own, I miss it

Riding bikes to school with my kids
For fifteen years, this has reliably been one of my favorite parts of my day

(to clarify: in Kindergarten they rode on a taglong so they weren’t pedaling the entire time. But entirely under their own power in 1st g)
December 16, 2025 at 8:14 PM
granted this is bikey Portland but I’m smug that we rode bikes on our 5-7 mi school commutes (magnet schools) ever since the kids were in Kindergarten. They started riding solo in 6th g. A healthy 5yo is *physically* capable of a 45min bike ride. Dealing with *cars* was ever our only issue

It is the ultra rare scifi/action movie where everyone (hero or villain) suffers actual consequences for their terrible decisions. Just a long string of fuckups by EVERYONE which results in wiping the table completely clear for something new

(which never arrives)
