It’s not too late for the @ima-maths.bsky.social to un-invite them or just entirely bin that conference all together.

It is possible to take a stand, not doing so would be a choice - maths is not neutral.

I don’t think that @ima-maths.bsky.social should be inviting speakers from BAE Systems to speak at their conference when BAE manufactures weapons which are used by Israel in the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

That sounds like Maths being complicit to me.

Aww that sucks that you were the only young woman in your class! Hopefully something that changes in future.

For this particular instance I’m not even sure the stat tells an accurate story. Half of all women could have 3 children and half with none and the births per woman would still be 1.5 😂

Or like the birth rate is somehow “women’s” responsibility when there are two people involved…?

I can’t quite explain it but something about describing a country’s birth rate in “births per woman” feels really misogynistic.

(As well as the obvious erasure of NB n trans peeps who give birth)

I love seeing fellow Maths nerds resisting authoritarianism and supporting others to do the same 💗
I’ve done a few coordinated phone actions on this side of the pond, it’s hard to feel the impact of the effort and I’d rather be just thinking about prime numbers - but I’m not giving up!
