Ups... sorry... I just got access to your comments (something went wrong before). I very much agree: LOTS is expected from school meals and I believe we need to be careful at attributing them effects that are not there in rich economies. I also believe we need to look at other outcomes...

Also a PhD student of mine @samuellado.bsky.social has found for England that universal school-meal programmes help increase the participation of mothers in the labour market once they are not afraid to loose means-tested benefits (WP coming out soon).

I also believe that there are important effects that we only begin to understand. For example, in Barcelona, we find that the programme helps develop language skills through socialisation and communication (lunch at school = + time spent with + advantaged children)

Thanks Jacob. I think I know the paper by heart by now. I really like it. Gow... interesting pilot going on there. Overall I believe a lot is expected from school-meal programmes... yet they may not always-everywhere deliver all the expected results (and we must know that).

Does providing kids with meals at schools increase their performance?

This new meta-analysis addresses this question very rigorously.

They find that school-meal programs in high-income economies have minimal impact on students' behavior, health, and education.

Thanks for the interest. This is a pretty standard way in meta-analysis. Anyway multiple robustness checks and BMA tell that it doesn't make much of a difference.
