They haven't gotten their shock and awe levels yet because it isn't fiscal 2026 yet and the tens of billions of dollars in OBBB funding haven't hit. They're hiring and building or contracting facilities. The worst is yet to come.

They have to be counseled on their other options, such as hospice, and they may have to be referred to psychological counselling or evaluation. They must be informed of their ability to rescind the request. There is a mandatory waiting period. Providers must report to the state.

There must be two witnesses to the written and signed request. At least one of the witnesses cannot be a family member, estate beneficiary, current physician, or operator/employee of the patient's care facility. Nobody who could influence the patient, in other words.

As a disabled person, I understand the concern, but specifically in this region, it is something empowering for a lot of people who are terminally ill. Providers cannot push it. Two physicians must certify the voluntary request and believe the patient is capable of making the decision freely.

You are positing baseless claims. The legislation is clear. I personally know people who have used physician-assisted suicide (we don't call it MAiD here). There is strict oversight by the states of WA and OR. It may be possible to abuse it elsewhere, but it's nearly impossible here.

It is not pushed on people in Oregon and Washington. In fact, that is blatantly illegal and there are multiple safeguards. I can't speak to other legislation or locales.

We have had Death With Dignity legislation in place in the Northwest for ages and it is strictly regulated and for terminal illness only. People can't choose to use it simply because they are disabled or their treatment is too expensive. It works well here. Can't speak to other legislation.

You don't need a parallel private system if you properly fund and manage the public system. Raise taxes if you have to. Rich people shouldn't be able to cut in line.
