The deterioration of the political landscape is textbook causation v. correlation. Technology did more to change the landscape than the Fairness doctrine's repeal did, and it ain't close.

MSM today would not be impacted at all by the Fairness Doctrine, since fewer people get their information these days from TV and radio as opposed to cable, internet and podcasts.

Most lies, both before, during and after the Fairness Doctrine era, are protected by the 1st Amendment.
The Fairness Doctrine did not have anything in it regarding suing stations for lying.
