Nuclear energy in any meaningful form is dead in Australia. Progress on decarbonising, via renewables, can proceed on a sensible path.

Historically, flexible gas & hydro generators have complemented less flexible coal, to ensure supply can meet demand.
In the future, flexible generation will be dominated by batteries & they'll be also used to firm PV & wind.

The coalition's nuclear plan released on Friday achieves its claimed cost savings not primarily by nuclear being cheaper than firmed renewables but by replacing firmed renewables with existing coal power. That results in an additional 1 billion tonnes of emissions (worth ~$180b).
