Sometimes I think about how from 1935-1975ish, Bell Labs produced an insane amount of revolutionary science and technology, including 11 Nobel Prizes, the transistor, UNIX, C, the laser, the solar cell, information theory, etc. The secret? Provide scientists with ample, steady, no-strings funding.

Interesting examples of authoritarian governments losing power to united opposition movements focused on positive messages.
Does anyone have book recommendations for more depth on these examples or others?

(real talk: nearly lost composure talking about the soviets coming after muller and vavilov for telling the scientific truth about genetics and it LANDED with the students. They get it.)

Compassion isn’t a weakness.
Empathy isn’t a sin.
Cruelty isn’t a strength.
Vengeance isn’t a virtue.

And It Can’t Happen Here is literally about opposing a fascist take over of the US by a populist demagogue running to FDR’s left in 1936.

A reminder to please support non-profit publishers.

It’s good for science and scientists.

It’s a responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

It requires resisting peer pressure to submit to Nature journals.

Thanks @bacteriality.bsky.social for this helpful slide for microbiology journals.
Slide with text “Support Society Journals:
Society-based journals help build and advocate for our scientific communities” showing the logos for non profit publishers ASM, ACS, ASBMB. microbiology society, Science, and ISME. Underneath “for-profit journals do not” showing logos for Nature, Elsevier, Frontiers, CellPress, and MDPI.
