"Archives hold many examples of the centrality of paperwork for marginalised groups when rights are unstable or out of reach. They show how migrants use paperwork to imagine rights - to see a right to protection before one exists."

Happy 6 years at UTAS to me!

(And thank you to the colleague who saw that this job and I were suited)

Lots of articles focusing on particular aspects of the White Australia Policy - in terms of who was welcomed and who was excluded
baibi.bsky.social
Depends what aspect you’re looking at, but maybe Tavan’s Long Slow Death of White Australia (2005), or Palfreeman’s Administration of the White Australia Policy (1967)

Happy that my Tim is in his happy place for a bit - playing with cultural heritage data and working with some nice people!

Lovely write-up about the new ‘Shared Connections: Cantonese Stories in Australia’ exhibition developed by Sophie Couchman for the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou!

(I also had a small hand in the exhibition, and it features my daughter’s story 😊)

Today I took custody of a box of historical materials that were purchased in a Launceston antique shop many years ago – I suspect they came out of the old Sun Hung Ack store. Among the treasures are a collection relating to the Tasmanian See Yip Club (which I knew existed but nothing more!)
A selection of historical documents relating to the Tasmanian Chinese See Yip Social Club, including blank membership cards, rule book and account book

That’s strange, archive.is links remove the paywall. You could try saving it there yourself?

Today was my last day of sick leave – on Monday I return to work (0.4FTE) after 4 months off. It was a happy day of errands, lunching with a munchkin and her mum, and chatting with my teenager. I don’t know how my return to work will go, but I’m hopeful that this time I can make it work🤞. #longCOVID

Given how Deloitte and other management consultant firms have inveigled themselves into university governance in Australia and internationally … this stinks

I spent the afternoon representing UTAS Family History at Convict Connections at the Cascades Female Factory, looking out these windows over the walls of the Female Factory to a snowy kunanyi. (It’s on again tomorrow if you want help with convict ancestors!)

I hear you! Also important to recognise that PEM isn’t just caused by physical exertion - for me, cognitive work and social interaction (including meetings, being in busy places) is exhausting.

Such a joy to be working with family historians, community members and our wonderful project team to tell more Chinese Tasmanian histories. Recording to share will come, I hope!

I have known this move since before I came to UTAS and to Hobart, but back then I imagined myself riding my bike to work in town, shopping and eating out at lunchtime, and so on. Sigh.

We will soon move to a newly renovated building in town, but it means a desk in an open plan office, not an office with a door and window, and a commute without parking. I fear it effectively means I will rarely be able to work on campus. Another thing lost to this stupid illness. #longCOVID

Yep, and I also don’t see mistakes I make (which frustrates me no end as I am pretty much the most pedantic person in the world).
