In college I worked summers at an amusement park in the Chicago suburbs, and the single most dangerous day of the year was the annual Chicago FOP picnic. The cops would get drunk and roam the park, in shorts and t-shirts, with their guns strapped to their waist. We didn't let girls work alone.

after 2001 we turned the cops into troops domestically, and turned troops into cops overseas. after a quarter-century of that, plus complete legal and financial impunity for their actions, we wonder why american police are indignant whiners who act like brutalizing their neighbors is a right.

AI still hasn’t made a cogent argument that it can do the work that makes the economy run. It doesn’t wash dishes, it doesn’t build houses, it doesn’t fill potholes, it doesn’t solve climate change (through idea or build-out), and its best delivery drivers are all mechanical turks.

New: Broadview, IL Mayor Katrina Thompson issued an executive order today - her first this year - limiting protest outside the Broadview ICE facility to between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The order cites "recent escalation of violence by ICE" at the facility as reason to restrict protest there.
