"Trumpomuskovia" is a word I introduced in an essay about some historical moments that might help us to understand the coming reality. The better we see the new regime, the more clearly we might also see its fractures and weaknesses.

What do people think about these ideas? I would love to have this much hope. Article by Asli Adintasbas, a Turkish journalist who lived through Erdogan's rise to power.

Reading the pardon coverage...I don't think the significance of the Gaetz/Patel/Bondi nominations has sunk in. People still aren't getting what a politicized DOJ and FBI, with the power to arrest/bug/harass anyone for any reason, would be able to do.

You decide whose description of Kash Patel is most accurate:
NYT: "firebrand loyalist."
WSJ: "loyalist."
WaPo: "staunch defender."
AP: "steadfast Trump ally."
Me: "Trump henchman."
Democracy Docket is fiercely independent. It will never obey. www.democracydocket.com/me-subscribe...

If you don’t think this is exactly what we’re up against, then you haven’t been paying attention.

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.
Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.

1/ I know you've heard me talk about the Alabamization of America--bad policy often gets a try out down here first. Mass deportations sound great for culture warriors, but that stops when they actually start happening. cafe.com/notes-from-c...
Note from Joyce: The Harsh Reality of Trump on Immigration
Once you vote in someone like Donald Trump, it’s hard to stop that process once it’s in motion. You buy the ticket, you get the whole ride.

What Letting Trump Use Recess Appointments Could Mean
Donald Trump’s stated desire to use recess appointments is about more than putting his cabinet secretaries and other appointees in place without a fight.

Timothy Snyder on the Cabinet picks: these are deliberate attempts to destroy each of these departments from the top. IMO, not worth the energy to lament each person's inappropriateness. But yes, push our senators to block.

Marches? Civil disobedience? We are in a different and more dire political situation. Focus on instrumental rather than expressive actions. This is a really incisive analysis.
Collective Survival, Adaptation and Direct Action
Defiance must be woven into the fabric of our daily lives, rather than simply proclaimed at marches or on social media.
