Cover of Erica Stern's book, FRONTIER, which i think looks pretty cool but don't feel my description would do it much justice

Totally agree! Something I have in my "what are literary magazines and why you should care" thing I do sometimes for students. Gives you a very clear view of what stands out and how subjective the process is. My thick rejection skin is from those early days reading for @barrelhouse.bsky.social.

I started at @splitlipthemag.bsky.social in 2018. It changed my trajectory as a reader & writer. I'm beyond grateful to @maureenlangloss.bsky.social & Split Lip! I'm stepping down this month bc of work obligations. But: volunteer at litmags! The community&experience will change you in the best ways!

Had such a great time in Pennsylvania these last few days, hanging at Pocket Books with @mrswhitehouse74.bsky.social and H&H Books with @samuelashworth.bsky.social. Got to hug @jamiebeth.bsky.social and a bunch of @barrelhouse.bsky.social friends. 🥰

Now I have to teach today. Wtf.
An outdoor chalk sign that says Grieco vs Ashworth, with two arms wrestling. One arm says "short story" and the other says "novel." Magnet with a cute bird saying "Things just got super weird--it's my time to shine." Tara, Jamie Beth, and me. Looking cute af. Me sitting at a table like a real life author, signing books and talking to people.

Dan/Dzanc were one of my models of "you can just start a press" -- an indie that published good work, found readers, and made a lasting mark. He was also just a really good guy. We'll miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dan Wickett's passing. We worked together for years at Dzanc Books, and I'm so grateful for all he did for me there and elsewhere. He was a great friend, a brilliant reader, a true advocate for writers. He loved books like no one else. I miss him already, and always will.

Adding my voice to the chorus of those mourning the passing of Dan Wickett. Dzanc was my first publisher and Dan was its heart and soul: tireless on behalf of writers and their work, generous with his time and emotional energy, kind and encouraging to everyone he met. Rest well, old friend.

Crushed by this news. Sad when it takes something like this to fully realize it, but Dan was almost certainly one of the most important people in my literary life, which is to say he was among the most important people in my life, full stop. A true model for loving writing, and being a true friend.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Dan Wickett, founder of the Emerging Writers Network and Dzanc Books. Dan was so kind and such a connector. He was one of the first people to take me seriously as a writer and take @barrelhouse.bsky.social seriously as a literary magazine.

Dan was one of our earliest friends and allies in indie lit, and we are very saddened by this news
