Republicans rampant gun proliferation policies led to the surge. They knowingly subverted the country by politicizing guns. The gun crime and carnage that followed played right into their 'tough on crime' shtick. The more carnage the better for them as far as they're concerned.

Noem is not answering a single question, nor does Hegseth. Instead, all they do is filibuster, shout, & talk over the questioner & resort to blaming Biden.
It's a crime to lie to Congress, so it should also be a crime for someone to refuse to directly answer quesions without invoking the 5th.
