I may not have played high level hockey (despite still playing at 50) but I have done team-building for 20 years for pretty much every major company in Canada. Here are the stages of team development. The Habs were entering the Norming stage recently before a new member joined the team (Laine).

Not sure about Lambert. Scott Wheeler ranked him 57th best prospect and summed it up this way.

As Brian has pointed out many times, even the top of the draft is a crap shoot. We have to stop believing Top 5 picks are guaranteed game changers. Look at the 2019 Draft. Notice the Top 10 point getters so far, only 1 is a superstar and many are still trying to establish themselves 5 years later.
